Organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and sponsored by New World Development Company Limited, the “New Year. New World. Hong Kong Countdown 2023” will take place on the evening of December 31 this year at Victoria Harbour and various buildings across Hong Kong Island. Hong Kong was ranked first in CNN’s “Top 10 Unique New Year’s Eve Cities Around the World” last year. This year’s countdown event will feature numerous new elements, surpassing previous years in scale. Starting at 11:00 PM, buildings along the Hong Kong Island waterfront will launch shooting-star fireworks every 15 minutes, allowing attendees to capture beautiful moments and make wishes for the coming year.

The six highlights of the “New Year. New World. Hong Kong Countdown 2023” include: First, a new high-altitude fireworks show, featuring high-altitude fireworks for the first time, combined with lights and music, presenting an eight-minute “Fireworks Music Spectacular” over Victoria Harbour; Second, the largest-scale performance in history, with fireworks and pyrotechnics launched at varying heights and over a broader and higher area than before, extending the visual spectacle three-dimensionally outward to create the largest fireworks music event ever; Third, focus on the Wan Chai Convention and Exhibition Centre, with fireworks launched from the rooftops of seven buildings in Wan Chai and Admiralty to complement the main display; Fourth, a giant LED screen next to the Convention Centre will display the large “2014” at midnight; spanning both sides of Victoria Harbour, six-tier fireworks will be launched from the waters off Tsim Sha Tsui to the centre of the harbour, layering towards the shore and reaching up the skyline to create a grand and spectacular scene connecting both sides of the harbour; Fifth, delightful fireworks designs, including heart shapes and smiley faces, adding a joyful festive atmosphere and sending blessings to all; Sixth, near-shore fireworks: the fireworks will be launched close to the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade, allowing audiences to experience the impact of the fireworks up close.

Hong Kong Tourism Board Chairman Andrew Lau said: “This year’s fireworks show will continue to feature the popular Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre as the focal landmark. The scale of the event is the largest ever, with many new elements added to further highlight the magnificent views of Victoria Harbour. Visitors can enjoy the countdown fireworks show near the harbour and experience the lively atmosphere on-site.”
The best viewing spots for the Hong Kong New Year fireworks music show include the coastal area from Tsim Sha Tsui’s Avenue of Stars to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the new Central Harbourfront, around piers 9 and 10 in Central, and Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai.
For New Year’s Eve travel plans, some travel agencies still have available seats and rooms. For example, Bestway Travel offers packages starting from HK$13,888 for a three-day stay at the Grand Hyatt Hotel; Southeast Travel features the East Hotel boutique hotel starting from HK$14,800; and Five Star Travel has reserved rooms at the Park Regis Kowloon starting from HK$16,800.
