Global online hotel booking platforms have selected the top 10 emerging Asian travel cities for 2014, recommending popular new destinations in Asia that are gaining increasing attention. Following Hualien in 2012 and Nantou last year, this year’s list includes two Taiwanese cities in the top five—Kenting, known as the “end of the country,” and the port city of Kaohsiung—demonstrating the vibrant growth of Taiwan’s tourism industry and the growing appreciation among international travelers for the beauty of Taiwan.

In Agoda.com’s rankings, the top five are Mandalay in Myanmar, Kenting in Taiwan, Okinawa in Japan, Lombok in Indonesia, and Kaohsiung in Taiwan. It describes Kenting, located at the southernmost tip of Taiwan, as encompassing several distinct scenic areas along with a national park, and being renowned for its lush forests and tropical beaches. Moreover, outdoor enthusiasts will instantly fall in love with Kenting. Here, visitors can surf, swim, hike, camp, explore caves, or even soak in hot springs—there are plenty of captivating outdoor activities to enjoy. Nearby towns also offer a slow-paced lifestyle, perfect for cycling through the countryside and immersing oneself in the authentic charm of Taiwan. The night market on Kenting Street is also a must-visit. By the way, Kenting’s famous “Spring Scream” music festival will be held from April 3 to 6 this year.

As for Kaohsiung, a mountain-and-sea coastal city in southern Taiwan, it has frequently appeared on the CNN Travel website. This coastal metropolis is one of Taiwan’s five special municipalities and an important political, economic, and commercial hub. Kaohsiung is well-known for its international trade port, and in recent years, its tourism industry has flourished. Urban beautification projects and a growing number of new flight routes make it easy for travelers from nearby countries to visit. With its mild and pleasant climate, Kaohsiung remains lively all year round. Its proximity to numerous beautiful towns also makes it an ideal base for exploring the beauty of southern Taiwan. Transportation in Kaohsiung is very convenient—whether by MRT or rented bicycle, visitors can leisurely explore museums, go shopping, or sample authentic Taiwanese flavors at night markets.
Ranking sixth to tenth in this evaluation are Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Osaka in Japan, Chiang Rai in Thailand, Perth in Australia, and Da Nang in Vietnam.
