Firefly Season Preview: Registration Now Open for Firefly-Watching Events in Taipei, New Taipei, and Nantou

As late spring transitions into early summer, the enchanting dance of fireflies will soon light up Taiwan’s forests and mountains. So far,three locations—Taipei City’s Qian Die Valley, New Taipei City’s Erge Mountain, and Nantou County’s Lugu—have opened registration for firefly-watching events, with Nantou County’s Lugu starting the earliest on April 5. Netizens eager to catch the beautiful sight of fireflies can start signing up for related activities and plan a rare firefly-watching trip.

Taipei City’s “2014 Qian Die Valley Firefly Season” in Shilin’s Neishanxi is coming soon, with firefly species such as the yellow-bordered firefly and black-winged firefly expected to appear around the end of March.This year, Qian Die Valley will open for nighttime firefly viewing from April 18 to May 25, and registration for visits is now open. Weekends accept individual, group, family, and casual visitors by appointment, while weekdays are divided into B1 slots (available for groups of 5 or more) and B2 slots (requiring a group of 20 or more), with advance payment required upon booking. This year’s “2014 Tongxue Firefly Dance Season” at the Erge Mountain Nature Center will run from April 12 to May 10, featuring three types of tours: a 2.5-hour Wednesday-only session, a half-day Sunday-only session, and a full-day Saturday-only session. In addition to the highlight event “Erge Firefly Avenue,” the program also includes activities like getting to know Erge and a firefly Q&A session. The 2.5-hour Wednesday session is suitable for seniors and families with young children,while a Friday-only session on April 18 and 25 is designed for photography enthusiasts,requiring self-organized groups of 20 to 40 people. Nantou County’s annual 2014 Lugu Township Firefly Season is back. To experience the romantic glow of fireflies in the early summer night, join this year’sguided tour events held every Saturday and Sunday from April 5 to April 27, totaling eight sessions.
