Everyone knows that a student ID can get you lots of discounts, but many may not realize that getting an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) to purchase student flights can save you tens of thousands of dollars compared to regular tickets, and also includes checked baggage allowances. Nowadays, many young people opt for budget airlines to save money, but end up sacrificing many services. What they don’t know is that with an ISIC, you can buy student flights from major airlines such as China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, Emirates, and Delta, while also enjoying a variety of great services and discounts, saving a significant amount on travel expenses.

Take Delta Air Lines for example: Economy class free baggage allowance has been increased to two pieces, providing each passenger with a sleep kit that includes an eye mask and earplugs, in-flight Wi-Fi is available, with the B747-400 international fleet being among the first Wi-Fi-equipped planes, plus the handy "FLY Delta" app lets you check the latest flight status and baggage information anytime.
The ISIC (International Student Identity Card) is currently the only internationally recognized student ID endorsed by UNESCO, encouraging students with limited budgets to step beyond their borders at a young age, broaden their horizons, and engage in cultural exchanges. The "International Student Travel Alliance" has thus negotiated with businesses and companies worldwide to offer a variety of consumer discounts to international students. Currently, cardholders can enjoy over 40,000 consumer discounts in 120 countries, including purchasing student flights in Taiwan (for example, in 2014, up to NT$17,000 could be saved compared to regular tickets), visiting museums, art galleries, and theaters around the world, with discounts of up to 50% available.
If you’re not a student, you can’t apply for an ISIC, but if you’re under 30 years old, you can apply for an International Youth Travel Card; or if you’re a teacher, you can apply for an International Teacher Card, to make traveling even more affordable. Although the International Youth Card doesn’t have as many global partner merchants as the ISIC, it does offer discounts on some South American flights, and has plenty of partner stores in the UK and US – for example, 5% off on Baz Bus in the UK; 20% off car rentals with Alamo in the US; and 10% off the New York Pass for public transport in NYC. Additionally, the special teacher and student tickets launched by Emirates are the only ones in Taiwan where teachers can also purchase discounted tickets with an International Teacher Card.
