Dan Hart, the whale watching supervisor at Sunreef, expressed great excitement about offering this amazing experience to visitors. “I’ve swum with humpback whales in Tonga, and it was a truly special encounter—just being a few metres away from them, eye to eye. It’s hard to put into words. This experience will give people a magical connection with these incredible animals, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer it to every visitor.”
Dan Hart also noted that swimming with humpback whales is conducted under strict regulations to ensure the safety of both guests and whales. Each trip lasts approximately three hours round-trip, with a maximum of 20 participants per session. Sunreef provides safety briefings to all guests and supplies wetsuits and snorkelling gear. Once whales are spotted, the boat will stay 100 metres away. If it's deemed safe, the engines will be turned off, and guests may enter the water while holding onto a flotation line attached to the boat.

The whale swimming activities take place in the prime area of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast—Mooloolaba. It takes just 10 minutes from the Sunreef dock to reach these beautiful waters. During the winter whale migration months, the water conditions here are ideal, with sea temperatures ranging between 17 to 23 degrees Celsius and visibility improving to up to 30 metres.
