Since 1972, the merlion statue has stood as a guardian of the Lion City for 40 years. Legend has it that in the 11th century, a prince from the Srivijaya Kingdom landed in Singapore and spotted a lion, prompting him to name the place “Singapura.” “Singa” means lion in Malay, and “Pura” means city—hence the origin of Singapore’s nickname, the “Lion City.” The fish tail symbolizes Singapore’s older name, Temasek, meaning “Sea Town,” illustrating how the city evolved from a small seaport into the thriving metropolis it is today.

The 8.6-meter-tall, 70-ton merlion statue was created in 1972 by the late renowned Singaporean sculptor Lim Nang Seng using concrete, with its surface covered in ceramic scales. For the past 30 years, it quietly guarded the mouth of the Singapore River until 2002, when urban redevelopment led to its relocation 120 meters from its original site. The new location spans 2,500 square meters—four times larger than the original—and is water-themed. At night, the illuminated merlion creates a vivid and spectacular visual effect, appearing to float above the water. It is an iconic attraction not to be missed by visitors to Singapore.
