The design of the fountain was inspired by Roman triumphal arches, and its overall form resembles a grand theater.The fountain’s majestic carvings depict the story of the sea god. The background building is the Rococo-style Palazzo Poli, divided into three sections by four columns. At the center stands Neptune, the sea god, riding a chariot drawn by winged horses. To his left and right are the goddesses of Abundance and Health, while above, four maidens represent the four seasons. Accompanying Neptune are two tritons—half-man, half-fish creatures—one controlling a wild sea horse and the other taming other animals. Many of the sea creatures in the fountain pool are based on ancient imaginings.

 

The reliefs on this fountain are quite intricate, crafted by students of Baroque master Bernini, and are worth admiring in detail. When you visit this popular attraction, you’ll find it somewhat cramped due to the limited space—tourists can only stand or sit around the fountain, with no additional areas for rest.

Romans have a romantic legend: if you stand with your back to the fountain, toss a coin over your right shoulder into the water with your right hand, your wish will come true. One coin means you’ll return to Rome in this lifetime, two coins mean you’ll find love and stay with someone special, and three coins will make your enemies go away.In the movie “Roman Holiday,” Audrey Hepburn made a wish by tossing a coin into this very fountain.If you want to return to Rome, don’t forget to stand with your back to the Trevi Fountain and toss a coin over your left shoulder into the water.
