The origins of Holi vary, but one popular story tells of an ancient Indian tyrant who forbade his people from worshipping Lord Vishnu. However, his son insisted on his faith. On the night of the full moon, the tyrant ordered his sister, the demoness Holika, to burn the prince to death. Instead, the demoness perished herself, while the prince remained unharmed. The people believed this was the protection of Lord Vishnu and thus joyfully celebrated by throwing seven colors of water on the prince.

On this day, people need not worry about status, identity, gender, or age—all hierarchical constraints are set aside, because teasing and wholehearted enjoyment are the main spirits of Holi. When people shout “Happy Holi!” to one another, it’s like the sound of a battle horn, kicking off a series of colorful assaults. All you need to do is grab some powder and splash the world into a riot of color, dancing to dynamic Indian music while smearing color on everyone and spreading blessings everywhere.
