Taitung’s Pisilian (比西里岸), at first glance, might sound like the name of a beautiful coastal area, but it’s actually a small indigenous village located north of Sanxiantai. Pisilian is an Amis word meaning “a place for herding sheep.” In the past, the Amis residents who lived here would let their sheep roam freely on the small islets near Sanxiantai. Thanks to the tides that would rise and fall, the sheep would remain on the islets. In the Amis language, sheep are called “sili,” which is how this place got its name, Pisilian (比西里岸).

In recent years, many Jimmy Liao-themed installations have been set up starting from Yilan, extending eastward all the way to Hualien’s Hanpingshuan Hotel, Taitung Art Museum, and the Pisilian tribal village in Taitung. These creatively use Jimmy Liao’s fresh and meaningful illustrations to connect various scenic spots across eastern Taiwan.

Hidden within the Pisilian tribal village are 11 Jimmy Liao artworks, themed around the little girl Xiaomi and her dog A-Ji from the picture book “A Story About Aki and Xiaomi on a Spring Afternoon.” They are scattered throughout the village, guiding visitors to explore the life of Pisilian alongside Xiaomi and A-Ji.

Besides Jimmy Liao’s artworks, walking along the embankment of Pisilian, you can find hundreds of uniquely crafted wooden sheep created through collaborations between renowned woodcarvers and tribal residents. These sheep, scattered along the coast, on wave-dissipating blocks, and throughout the village, are set against the backdrop of the sky and sea, recreating the charm of Pisilian as a historic sheep-herding land. The blend of culture and nature forms one of the most beautiful artistic landmarks.
