Every winter, Abraham Lake at the foot of the Canadian Rockies attracts numerous photography enthusiasts who gather to capture the seasonally limited, stunning spectacle of frozen bubbles.

Abraham Lake is an artificial lake, constructed in 1972, and was named Abraham during a public naming competition. Every winter, the lake’s surface gathers large amounts of frozen bubbles, creating a dreamlike scene.

These bubbles are formed by methane gas released from plants at the bottom of Abraham Lake, combined with the low temperatures on the lake’s surface. As methane continuously rises from the lake bed, when the air temperature drops to a certain level, the surface begins to freeze, encapsulating these bubble-formed cavities and preserving them. Layer upon layer of frozen bubbles accumulate to create the beautiful sight we see today.
