Hong Kong’s new cultural and creative landmark – PMQ MetaHouse

When Central became a colony in 1841, it was known as “Victoria City,” a gathering place for all trades and industries. Over time, as the area evolved, its nearly 200-year history saw it described by locals as having reached a “crossroads.” The question of whether to preserve or redevelop urban landmarks became a contentious and challenging process, from which the city’s new face began to emerge. As part of the “Central Conservation” initiative, some buildings in the Central district were earmarked for preservation, including the former Hollywood Road Police Married Quarters, the precursor to today’s PMQ MetaHouse.After 2000, the police quarters lost their original function and remained vacant for 10 years. In November 2010, the Hong Kong SAR Government officially announced its revitalization as a flagship creative center, giving rise to today’s PMQ MetaHouse.

Managed jointly by PMQ MetaHouse and the Hong Kong Design Centre, the former police quarters have been transformed into a completely revitalized space.The spacious central courtyard often hosts design showcases and various brand fashion shows, while the former rows of police dormitories now house numerous design studios and shops.With over 100 designers and creative entrepreneurs, the space offers a variety of fashion accessories, lifestyle products, food items, furniture, jewelry and watches, design services, and design galleries. It has become a new stage for Hong Kong’s cultural and creative industries, with aspirations to establish PMQ MetaHouse as a milestone for Hong Kong’s creative sector—helping to expand into international markets and raise public awareness and appreciation of design and innovation.
