Whenever we talk about lakes, the first image that often comes to mind is a pool of cool blue or green water. But is there such a thing as a dreamy pink lake in the world aside from blue and green ones? Located in Senegal, Africa and Australia, these lakes may be small in size but display a stunning rose-pink hue that is truly breathtaking.

◎ Africa, Senegal — Lake Retba (Lake Retba))
Nestled within the desert of Africa’s westernmost region—where sand dunes stretch as far as the eye can see and yellow sands fill the sky—hides a beautiful oval-shaped pink lake: Lake Retba. Locals also call it the “Pink Lake.” It is a salt lake covering just 3 square kilometers, with an extremely high salt concentration of up to 380 grams per liter. Much like the Dead Sea, even non-swimmers can easily float on its waters.

The stunning pink color of Lake Retba comes from the high salinity of its waters, which are rich in halophilic microorganisms (Dunaliella salina). These organisms produce a red pigment that absorbs sunlight and reproduces, thereby dyeing the entire lake in shades of pink. As a result, the color of Lake Retba can vary from light to deep red depending on the salinity levels of the water.
The area around Lake Retba is usually tranquil and serene. Without mechanized salt-harvesting equipment, it’s common to see local men with dark skin, bare-chested, rowing boats to collect salt on the pink lake, while women dressed in vibrant clothing work busily beside the white salt mounds on the shore.

◎ Australia — Pink Lake Lake Hillier
Located on Middle Island, the largest island in the Recherche Archipelago off the southwestern coast of Australia, Lake Hillier is a pink lake surrounded by lush forests and edged with white salt rings. It was first discovered in 1802 by British maritime explorers.

Compared to Africa’s Lake Retba, Australia’s pink lake—enveloped by forest—is made even more distinct by the way its pink waters are set apart from the deep blue sea by a backdrop of verdant trees and white sandy beaches.
