Hotels.com, the world’s leading provider of online hotel services, recently released an interesting global survey indicating that Thai travelers are the most reluctant to part with their mobile devices while on vacation. As many as 85% of travelers said they would break out in a cold sweat at the mere thought of not being able to use their beloved phones while on holiday!

This study surveyed the digital device usage habits of people in 28 countries during vacations, to further understand which countries struggle the most with achieving a work-life balance and which countries’ travelers can truly switch off and fully relax while on holiday. The results also show that South Korean travelers come in second after Thailand in terms of mobile device attachment, with 78% of respondents saying they can’t go a day without their phones, while Japan ranks third with 69%.

In comparison, Taiwan and Norway are tied for sixth place, with 53% of respondents still unwilling to turn off their phones while on vacation. However, the study also shows that when the holidays end and they return home, nearly half of Taiwanese people (48%) regret spending too much time on their mobile devices while on vacation. It’s no wonder—as the vast majority (72%) admit to checking work emails while on vacation, and 86% say they try to use the break to forget about work. But for 53% of Taiwanese respondents, not being able to switch off their mobile devices isn’t just about work—it’s because they believe being able to access social media anywhere is very important.
