A photographer has released a series of photos capturing the blue luminescence in Australia’s Gippsland Lakes. In the images, the tranquil waters of Gippsland Lakes look as if fluorescent dye has been poured into them, emitting an eerie, magical blue glow in the dark.

The photographer Hart and his friends who went to shoot at Gippsland Lakes at the time threw stones into the lake, deliberately disturbing the water to create bursts of blue luminescence on the surface. As they entered the lake, their wet bodies were also coated with a layer of glowing blue paint, creating an effect that was both eerie and fascinating. The romantic luminescence of Gippsland Lakes shares the same cause as Taiwan’s Matsu “Blue Tears” phenomenon, which occurs from April to June. Both are caused by bioluminescent chemical reactions triggered when microorganisms called dinoflagellates in the water are disturbed. Generally, the light emitted by these microorganisms is not very noticeable and hard for passersby to detect, but the density of luminescent microbes in Gippsland Lakes is extremely high, resulting in this unique spectacle.

Scholars believe that the “abundance” of microbes in the lake is due to floods and forest fires that introduced rich nutrients into the water, promoting the massive proliferation of algae.

Gippsland Lakes is located in Victoria, Australia.
