When people think of Provence in France, most immediately picture the purple lavender fields exuding a delicate fragrance. The town of Avignon in France’s Provence region is the most famous homeland of lavender. Every year in June and July, the mountain plains of Provence burst into bloom with lavender, filling the air with the light scents of lavender and various wildflowers. The world around you becomes immersed in vast expanses of purple romance — an unforgettable sight.

To admire the most beautiful sea of flowers, you must visit during the blooming season to see the most stunning purples. Once the season is over, the colors gradually shift from purple to gray, then black, before the flowers wither. Conversely, if you visit before June, you’ll find emerald green lavender fields — a far cry from the iconic purple ones.

In the West, lavender symbolizes the waiting for love. In romantic Provence, there are also many touching legends. It is said that long ago, an angel fell in love with a mortal woman named Lavender. After being captured and taken back to heaven, he was banished back to the human world and transformed into a butterfly, staying by his beloved girl’s side. The devoted girl eventually turned into a small plant, blooming with light purple flowers every year across the hills and fields, all in search of the angel who had been banished to the mortal realm.
