Chen Chun-an, Director of Tainan City Government’s Tourism Bureau, stated that the Fayka photography competition is different from other photography contests, as it requires participants to complete five themed creations within 24 hours based on given topics, making it the ultimate challenge of physical endurance and photographic skill. Participants venture into streets and alleys, freely capturing a more distinctive side of Tainan. From the award-winning works, it’s not hard to see that within 24 hours in Tainan—from dawn to noon, from dusk to nightfall—each different scene plays out its own unique story. The interaction between people and the land creates moving narratives, enriching the pulse of Tainan’s story.

After a rigorous selection process from numerous entries, seven major awards were chosen this year (including the Grand Jury Prize, three Merit Awards, and three Honorable Mentions). The Grand Jury Prize was won by the team of Chien Chia-hung and Kuo Mei-chen. Their work, through the interplay of light and shadow and storytelling, fully showcases the daily life and cultural characteristics of Tainan’s local residents. The first stop, “Waltz,” featuring a roller-skating boy alongside a mechanic, tells the story of how the people of Tainan are constantly composing beautiful memories of life for their city. The second stop, “The Taste of Travel,” stands apart from other works by highlighting the surprises and small joys discovered during a journey in Tainan. The third stop, “Party Night,” showcases the charm of Tainan’s nightlife through the world-famous Garden Night Market. The fourth stop, “Alice in Wonderland,” expresses a whimsical and creative culture through archway stone lions, the artistically designed Hai’an Road, and the Little West Gate public art. The final stop, “Ancient Capital Illuminated,” uses light and shadow to reveal the mysterious, tranquil, candid, and vibrant side of Tainan’s ancient city, echoing closely with the passionate and culturally rich people of Tainan.

In addition to the original seven major awards, the Tainan City Government also awarded 50 other prizes. The selected works showcase the unique urban atmosphere and landscape features of Tainan and will be used for the city’s promotional efforts. It is hoped that these images will help tell Tainan’s story and market the city, while also bringing the local community closer together and allowing visitors to experience a different side of traveling in Tainan.
