This work won an award in an international photography competition, drawing the eyes of countless people, and photographer Kent Shiraishi also gained attention. The lake is located in Biei Town, Hokkaido, and is known as Blue Pond or Blue Pond. With sapphire-like waters that sometimes shift to an emerald hue depending on the environment, it has inspired many to visit. However, due to the pond’s inconvenient access, it has only added to its mysterious allure.

Just like Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, the emergence of Biei’s Blue Pond is also a beautiful mistake. Five kilometers away from the pond lies an active volcano called Mount Tokachi. Though the active volcano is dangerous, it also brings rich hot springs and scenic beauty—tourism resources that have long attracted travelers. In 1989, when Mount Tokachi erupted, the government undertook multiple projects to protect Biei Town, including constructing the dam that formed Blue Pond, shielding the town from potential lava damage.
