The National Taichung Theater is set to open on November 23, 2014. In recent years, numerous large-scale landmark buildings have been completed in Taichung, adding a wealth of design flair to the city’s urban landscape. We’ve specially compiled a list of Taichung’s well-known architecture and landmarks to help architecture-loving travelers include Taichung in their travel plans.

Asia Museum of Modern Art
The main structure of Asia University’s Asia Museum of Modern Art is built with fair-faced concrete and curtain walls, covering an indoor area of 1,244 pyeong (approximately 4,110 m²) and an outdoor space of 6,000 pyeong (approximately 20,000 m²). Designed by architect Tadao Ando, the building uses the equilateral triangle as its fundamental design element. The triangular floor plan is divided into three levels, stacked in a staggered formation to create countless irregular triangles. The resulting shifted void spaces and outdoor platforms function as versatile areas such as sculpting studios and open-air cafes.

Round Roof Outdoor Theater
If you’ve seen ancient European amphitheaters, you’ll notice that many were built in open-air circular forms. This outdoor circular design breaks free from the constraints of enclosed “black box” venues. Its participatory format and scale allow more members of the public to engage with performing arts, enhancing the quality and diversity of leisure activities. In addition to providing audiences with excellent sightlines, it also allows natural sound to reach the audience directly. Thus, Taichung’s circular outdoor theater combines performing arts with outdoor leisure, becoming a performance space suited to the needs of modern society.
