Northeastern Isaan – Rich Prehistoric Culture and Heritage

Northeastern Thailand – locally known as "Isaan (I-san)" – may be vast in area, but it is equally rich in culture and history.

The region features a vast plateau-like terrain, inhabited by some of Thailand’s most hospitable and down-to-earth people. The area is most famous for its improvised music, a folk rock genre called "Mor Lam," composed of passionate vocal phrases and energetic melodies. The area is home to Stone Age ruins, with ancient carved murals preserved on the steep stone walls of Ban Prasat in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, and the discovery of some of the earliest ancient pottery in Ban Chiang, Udon Thani Province. The red and white pottery unearthed here even predates the ceramics found in China in terms of style and age.
