A Light Bus Trip in Tainan: Grandma’s Mural Village & the Totoro Bus in One Go

Taiwan’s Tainan Shanhua District Grandma’s Mural Village Has a New Attraction! A cozy-themed mural village at Grandma’s house in Hucuoliao, Shanhua District, Tainan City, has recently unveiled a hidden mammoth fossil skeleton within the hay maze area next to the “Glorious Era” mural wall. Visitors returning to the site are advised to take the Orange No. 2 Branch Bus of the Greater Tainan Bus system, which also conveniently stops by the Totoro Bus Stop in Daniao—connecting two unique mural villages via a single branch bus line.

The mural village at Grandma’s house in Hucuoliao, Shanhua District, was initiated by a granddaughter living in the city who wanted to cheer up her grandmother, who preferred not to move to the urban area. The heartwarming bond between generations moved the entire community, prompting residents to join in painting the exterior walls. Over the past year, in addition to existing murals featuring Totoro, tapirs, robots, and the Chinese zodiac, the project has expanded to include many more painted walls and multiple informational signs to help visitors navigate. A mahjong-themed wall has also been completed. Surprisingly, the initiator of Grandma’s Mural Wall, surnamed Lee, borrowed a mammoth skeleton from the Shugutah Life Science Museum and discreetly placed it within the hay maze area next to the “Glorious Era Wall.” Walking along the 2-meter-high hay maze path, visitors will eventually come face-to-face with the mammoth’s two towering tusks, creating an impressive sight.
