Taiwan’s leading KTV operator, Cashbox, is reportedly merging with Holiday, aiming to compete with the rising star Happy Gathering Point. Cashbox operates 16 outlets nationwide, while Holiday has 52. Both companies are publicly listed. Some netizens jokingly asked if the merged entity will be called “GoodBox” (a play on words meaning “very expensive”), while others suggested naming it “MoneyHoliday.”

Cashbox (Cashbox Partyworld, Cashbox Enterprise Co., Ltd., stock code 8359) was established in March 1989, with its first store opening on LinSen North Road in Taipei. It quickly rose to prominence in the market with its private-room karaoke format. Starting in 1994, it expanded overseas and launched a magazine under the same name. In 2017, it exited the Chinese mainland market, and in February 2019, it announced the acquisition of Holiday for NT$6.7 billion.

Holiday (HOLIDAY KTV, Holiday Co., Ltd., stock code 9943) opened its first outlet in 1993 on Minsheng East Road in Taipei, becoming Taiwan’s first KTV company to use a computerized song-ordering system. Cashbox acquired Holiday’s external shares at NT$67.7 per share. Whether the merged entity will rebrand or maintain dual branding has become a hot topic among netizens.

Another latecomer, Happy Gathering Point, has carved out a niche with its focus on gourmet food, cultural creativity, and a fashionable vibe. Unlike Cashbox, which primarily attracts office workers, and Holiday, which mainly draws students, Happy Gathering Point is also vying for a share of the KTV and banquet event markets. Between November 2009 and January 2010, Happy Gathering Point rapidly launched outlets in Banqiao, Ximen, and Fuxing, integrating dining options such as Hong Kong-style dim sum, teppanyaki, hot pot, and marinated snacks. The brand emphasizes a comprehensive entertainment experience with singing stages and food and drinks—a direction that reflects current trends in Taiwan’s KTV market.

The merger of Cashbox and Holiday is expected to significantly expand its presence in southern Taiwan. Both the strategic direction of the merger and the development of Happy Gathering Point are topics of interest to consumers. Some netizens joked that if the merged entity really becomes “GoodBox” (i.e., very expensive), they’ll switch to singing at Happy Gathering Point—highlighting that cost remains a major concern for consumers even when seeking fun.
