Mugua & Muyu, regarded as one of the must-visit attractions in Hualien, reopened in early June after 11 months of mountain closure and renovation work. Perhaps due to the fact that only pedestrian hiking applications are allowed, there have been fewer than ten entry applications so far compared to previous bustling times.

The name Mugua & Muyu originates from the Truku language, meaning a beautiful paradise. Its mysterious natural beauty has made it one of the must-visit attractions in Hualien. In the past, during holiday seasons, numerous buses would enter the mountains, filling the narrow roads with tourist coaches, which often caused dissatisfaction among local tribal residents. Starting from July 2014, due to the impact of Typhoon Matmo, landslides occurred along the mountain roads in Hualien, leading to the closure of several key routes.
Now, after eleven months of requests from tourism operators, the Hualien County Government announced on June 4 the reopening of the collapsed section of the Mugua & Muyu Ecological Corridor (Provincial Highway 14B).Only those applying for entry for hiking and fitness activities are permitted, while general vehicles are prohibited from entering.It is important to note that due to exposed strata and the ongoing open-cut tunnel construction, there are still safety concerns regarding passage. The Hualien County Government also advises applicants to consider whether entry is truly necessary.
