Located offshore in western Taiwan, between China and Taiwan, Penghu Island is one of the 64 island groups that include Taiwan. Covering an area of 127 square kilometers with a total population of 100,000, the county-administered city of Penghu is Magong City.
Fishermen from the coastal areas of mainland China were the first to settle on Penghu Island as early as the 2nd century. In 1388, due to Ming Dynasty policies, residents evacuated the island. It remained largely uninhabited for centuries until people from the mainland returned in the 18th century. From the 19th century to the present, Penghu has been occupied in turn by France, Japan, and China.

Though not far from Taipei, Penghu Island differs from Taiwan’s main island. The local lifestyle, natural landscapes, slower pace of life, and paradise-like natural sights all help visitors escape the hustle and bustle — these are also the island’s unique charm.
