Japan’s Joetsu Shinkansen will debut a brand-new train, the “Genbi Shinkansen,” in spring 2016. Designed around the concept of “modern art,” the project enlisted famed Japanese photographer and designer Mika Ninagawa to personally oversee the design, offering passengers an unprecedented travel experience.

The “Genbi Shinkansen” is a refurbished version of the same E3 series used for the Foot Onsen Train (とれいゆ つばさ). The train consists of six cars and can accommodate 105 passengers per trip, running between Echigo-Yuzawa and Niigata. Mika Ninagawa themed the exterior around “The Colorful Summer Night of Nagaoka,” showcasing the vibrant splendor of Japan’s three major fireworks festivals. Inside, the carriages feature works by seven contemporary artists—including paintings, photographs, and video art by Naoki Ishikawa, Yusuke Komuta, Kentaro Kubota, and others—transforming the beautiful train into a moving art gallery.

In addition, the train is equipped with a café and a children’s room, offering snacks and drinks made with local ingredients from Niigata Prefecture. This blends modern art elements with strong regional character, making the experience something truly special.
