While the northern hemisphere is entering the cold autumn and winter seasons, the southern hemisphere is gearing up to welcome the bright and blooming spring. In Pretoria, South Africa, during October and November each year, the entire city is blanketed with jacaranda blossoms, like blue-violet flames that blaze passionately and dazzlingly, filling the city with extraordinary romance.

South Africa’s capital city, now renamed Tshwane, still retains its title as the Jacaranda City, with over 70,000 jacaranda trees planted throughout. Also known as the Brazilian jacaranda, the tree is native to tropical and subtropical regions, blooming from spring to early summer. The flowering season lasts about two months. When in full bloom, the entire jacaranda tree transforms into a massive cluster of blue-violet blossoms, swaying gently in the breeze, with delicate petals carrying a faint fragrance, creating an intoxicating beauty.

In Pretoria, you’ll find the most beautiful jacaranda tunnels. Just as the golden ginkgo leaves create a breathtaking view in autumn, when the jacaranda flowers bloom, the sky, ground, and everything in your line of sight will be filled with these dreamy blue-violet blooms — it’s like living a wonderfully surreal dream. If you’re looking to see an autumn scene other than maple leaves or ginkgo trees in October and November, why not fly to the southern hemisphere and admire the stunning jacarandas?
