Robert Redford plays Bill, a travel writer, who teams up with his long-lost and fugitive friend Katz (played by Nick Nolte) to conquer the Appalachian Trail. Completing this mountain hike in old age is considered nearly impossible, and they face constant competition from younger hikers. Though initially reluctant, the two seniors gradually learn to accept their limitations and even poke fun at themselves—knowing when not to push their limits is also a way to protect their lives. This brings home the philosophy that “submitting can bring blessings.”

The banter between the two elders resembles a mature version of “men’s talk,” full of humor and wit, interspersed among stunning mountain views and perilous paths. The seemingly incompatible duo, with contrasting personalities, slowly develop a sense of teamwork and mutual understanding. Through every crisis and disagreement, the astonishing natural scenery helps ease their friction. Just like in life’s journey, if one can let go of grievances and appreciate the beauty around them, negativity diminishes and positive energy grows stronger. More importantly, don’t let trivial matters ruin the bigger picture.

Through this journey, Katz, a recovering alcoholic, resists the temptation of alcohol in the face of vast mountain vistas; the man who had lost faith in life rediscovers the strength in family love, regains confidence in himself, and discovers the inspiration found in small things. The journey also prompts deep reflection on how to better navigate life’s phases, compare less with others, hold oneself to higher standards, and cherish each stage. The most important lesson is not letting unimportant matters disrupt the larger journey of life.
