The beautiful Pacific island nation of Palau recently announced the establishment of a marine protected area, about the size of Spain. This water zone will prohibit all extractive marine activities such as fishing and drilling to protect underwater ecosystems, aiming to allow marine life to thrive.

Palau has long been beloved by travelers worldwide for its naturally abundant marine resources. In addition to its stunning island scenery, attractions such as Jellyfish Lake and Milky Way Lake are must-visit spots. Recognizing the growing scarcity of marine resources, Palau’s president recently announced that 80% of the country’s waters will be designated as a marine protected area, covering 500,000 square kilometers — making it the world’s sixth-largest. This zone will safeguard 1,300 species of fish and 700 types of coral, while the remaining 20% of the sea will remain open for local and small-scale commercial fishing.

For a long time, Palau has placed great emphasis on marine conservation, deliberately avoiding certain reef areas during fish spawning or feeding seasons to give fish space to live. Now, this measure has been substantially expanded to cover most of Palau’s waters.
