Recently, reports from Taipei 101 suggest that due to a sluggish economy and difficulty in securing sponsors, this may be the last time the 101 New Year’s Eve fireworks are held.

Taiwan’s most iconic Taipei 101 New Year’s Eve fireworks have been launched for 11 consecutive years, with each show featuring creative and spectacular performances. This year, 30,000 fireworks were planned to create the longest show in history. However, as the event continues year after year, both the costs of the fireworks display and the pressure to deliver innovative designs have gradually increased. In addition, the economic downturn has made it difficult to find suitable sponsors, while environmental concerns about the fireworks displays have also been raised.

Taipei 101 spokesperson Liu Jiahao stated that since launching fireworks is not one of 101’s core businesses, and considering the enormous financial pressure and high organisational difficulty, they are starting to evaluate whether to continue the fireworks display from next year onwards. Currently, 101 has implemented a lighting improvement plan for the building’s exterior. Before the end of the year, LED lights will be installed on the top of the tower, and all eyebrow lights on the tower body will also be replaced with LEDs. It is not ruled out that starting from 2016, 101 may replace the fireworks with a light show on the building’s façade.
