The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum will begin trial operations at the end of the year. The Chiayi County Government has spent three years proposing the "Taiwan Tourist Shuttle – Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum Line", which has now been approved by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation. Starting in March 2016, it will connect with other Taiwan Tourist Shuttle routes, linking scenic spots in Chiayi’s mountainous, coastal, and plains areas, making the shuttle service coverage even more comprehensive.

Currently, there are two Taiwan Tourist Shuttle routes in Chiayi, including the "Alishan Line" that runs along the mountainous Alishan Highway to the forest recreation area, and another one, the "Salt Town Coastal Line", that serves the coastal townships of Chiayi and Tainan. The third shuttle route operating in the plains area, the "Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum Line", will be launched in 2016. If the route application and supporting industries go smoothly, it will officially start next March.

The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum Line draws inspiration from Tokyo’s JR Yamanote Line in Japan, using a loop concept to connect cultural, tourism, and industrial sites across the Chiayi Plains region. It includesChiayi HSR Station, Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, Suan Tou Sugar Refinery, Xingang Ban Tou Community, Fengtian Temple, Minxiong Railway Station, National Chung Cheng University, Songtian Gang, Chiayi Sightseeing Distillery, Huayi Life Village in Chiayi City, and Chiayi Railway Stationas 11 stops. Travelers can depart from either Chiayi HSR Station or Chiayi Railway Station, with at least five services daily. Minxiong Railway Station can serve as a transfer hub, greatly improving convenience and accessibility for backpackers.
