As the year draws to a close, festive Christmas vibes can be felt across the country toward the end of every year. The largest Christmas celebration in southern Taiwan takes place in Wanjin Village, Pingtung. Since the second Sunday of December is the Feast of the Patroness of Wanjin Basilica, and Christmas is an important Catholic festival, almost every household decorates with Christmas lights and nativity scenes, creating the most enchanting atmosphere of the Wanjin Christmas season.

The Wanjin Basilica was originally built without steel, using a mixture of crushed stone, lime, brown sugar, honey, kapok, and fire bricks. After several restorations, it still preserves its original Spanish-style fortress architecture, which is quite unique. Catholicism has been present in Wanjin Village, Wanluan Township for 150 years, and nearly 80% of the residents in Wanjin Village and Chishan Village are Catholic, forming the largest Catholic community. Every December, the Feast of the Patroness and Christmas activities at Wanjin Basilica are annual highlights for the region. Starting in 2011, Pingtung County Government began collaborating with Wanjin Basilica to organize Christmas season events. From simple street decorations in the early days to later 3D light shows and Christmas tree mural walls, the event attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to experience the sacred atmosphere of Wanjin Basilica.This year’s Wanjin Christmas Season is expected to run from December 1st to 25th. Plan ahead to visit Wanjin Basilica in Pingtung and enjoy a unique festive atmosphere.
