Prime maple-viewing destination in Central Taiwan – The leaves of Daxueshan are turning red

Daxueshan Forest Recreation Area is the most beautiful maple-viewing spot in Taichung, beloved by many travelers who adore maple leaves. Currently, about 20% of the maple trees have turned red. The best time to admire the foliage is from mid-to-late November to the end of December, so enthusiasts of beautiful scenery should seize the opportunity and head to Daxueshan to chase the fall colors.

The Dasyueshan Forest District Office stated that the maple trees in Daxueshan Forest Recreation Area mainly consist of Taiwan red maple, green maple, sweet gum, and pointed leaf maple. Currently, the degree of color change varies by area but has reached about 20%. The Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan' in front of the Visitor Center at kilometer 43 has donned its red attire, with fallen leaves scattering everywhere, offering visitors a touch of romantic autumn vibes. Additionally, this is peak season for sea of clouds at Daxueshan, where drifting mists among the mountains complement the crimson maple leaves, creating a poetic and picturesque scene.

Additionally, as the year comes to a close, it is also the best time to view the sea of clouds at Daxueshan. At over 22 kilometers along the Daxueshan Forest Road, there are several spots with wide-open views where, on clear days, you can see endless rolling green mountains. When the mountain winds blow, the sea of clouds drifts among the peaks. Daxueshan Forest Recreation Area is about a 45-minute drive from Dongshi. Consider staying overnight in Daxueshan and visiting Xinshe Flower Sea the next day — enjoy both maple leaves and flowers in one trip.
