In addition to traditional cultural sites such as ancient temples and shrines, Kyoto, Japan, is also home to a renowned railway museum. Currently, Japan is merging the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum and the Osaka Transport Museum, which will reopen in spring 2016 under the new name “Kyoto Railway Museum.” The museum will feature over 50 historically significant locomotives and carriages from both former museums, much to the excitement of train fans.

The newly merged “Kyoto Railway Museum” will span 30,000 square meters and showcase up to 53 locomotives and carriages, making it the Japanese museum with the largest number of trains on display. In addition, the Kyoto Railway Museum offers several must-see highlights, including a rotary roundhouse structure and the display of Japan’s oldest surviving wooden train shed, originally located at the former Nijo Station.
