Located in the southeastern corner of the Yucatán Peninsula in Central America and embracing the western Caribbean Sea, Belize boasts a prime geographical position along with the natural splendor of blue skies, clear seas, high mountains, and rainforests. ● Eye of the Ocean, the Great Blue Hole
For advanced divers, snorkeling at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley is just an appetizer—the real goal is none other than a scuba dive into the “Great Blue Hole.” After being listed among the world’s top ten dive sites by renowned explorer Jacques Cousteau in 1991, the Great Blue Hole quickly became one of the must-dive spots for divers worldwide. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1996 and ranked among the world’s top ten natural wonders by the Discovery Channel in 2012.

The “Great Blue Hole” is located in Lighthouse Reef, one of the three atolls off the coast of Belize, and is the world’s largest underwater sinkhole formed in limestone. The porous limestone geology created underground caves during the Quaternary Ice Age. When sea levels rose, the cave ceilings collapsed and were flooded by seawater, forming today’s Great Blue Hole. With a diameter of about 300 meters, the hole appears as a perfectly round sapphire blue void within the colorful turquoise waters of the shallow reef lagoon. Viewed from a helicopter, its deep, mysterious expanse resembles a watchful eye gazing at the sky—hiding the secrets of nature. A narrow passage through the surrounding reef allows dive boats to enter.
