Recently, due to continuous rainfall, the water level of Poyang Lake—the largest freshwater lake on the Chinese mainland—has been rising steadily, causing the Dahu Pond section of Yongwu Highway (from Yongxiu County to Wucheng Town in Jiangxi Province) to be submerged. The road is faintly visible under the water, resembling a dragon swimming beneath the surface.
Yongwu Highway is 29 kilometers long and is a county-level road maintained by local government. It is also the only route connecting Wucheng Town to the outside world. The Dahu Pond section is 5.05 kilometers long and was fully opened for two-way traffic in late November 2013.
In July 2014, the continuously rising water level overflowed onto the Dahu Pond road. A netizen uploaded photos of the “water highway,” which immediately drew attention. Tourists and photography enthusiasts flocked to the site. Since then, the Dahu Pond road has been hailed as the “Most Beautiful Water Highway.”

According to CCTV News, this section of the road is actually a specially built “floodable road surface.” Under normal use, it allows water flow to cover the road surface during flood seasons, and the roadbed features anti-scouring designs.
The Dahu Pond road passes by the famous Poyang Lake Migratory Bird Reserve. During the winter dry season, visitors can see migratory birds resting on the wetlands and swaying reed marshes. When the flood season arrives and the lake level rises, the road becomes submerged, faintly visible under the water like a dragon swimming below, with its roadside poles, lake water, and blue sky forming a harmonious and picturesque scene.
