As the season of cherry blossom blooms approaches, Taiwan’s largest cherry blossom event in 2016, the “Nine Tribes Cherry Blossom Festival,” officially kicked off from January 30 to March 5 (Updated: The event has been extended to March 6)Throughout the area, weeping cherry blossoms were the first to bloom in late January at the European Garden. In February, around 5,000 “Nine Tribes Hundred-layer Cherry Blossoms” will continue the floral spectacle. To enrich the cherry blossom experience, the festival also offers tea ceremonies, poetry exhibitions, musical performances, and opportunities to try on Japanese kimonos and ride in rickshaws, ensuring visitors to the Nine Tribes Cultural Village can enjoy the most breathtaking spring scenery.

The Nine Tribes Cherry Blossom Festival was first held in 2001 as the “Sun Moon Lake Nine Tribes Cherry Blossom Festival.” Now in its 15th edition, the festival is renowned for its large and densely planted cherry blossom trees, which have amazed both domestic and international visitors and helped establish its reputation. It has also fueled the trend of cherry blossom planting across Taiwan. Although cherry blossoms can now be found in many places, the Nine Tribes Cherry Blossom Festival remains widely recognized as Taiwan’s longest-running, most culturally rich, and largest-scale cherry blossom event. In 2013, it earned recognition from the Japan Flower Association as an “Excellent Cherry Blossom Spot” and is the only overseas location certified by Japan as a “Cherry Blossom Viewing Destination.”

This year’s Nine Tribes Cherry Blossom Festival began on January 30. In addition to daytime cherry blossom viewing, night cherry blossom events will take place in the cherry blossom forests, lakes, and pathways from January 30 to February 29, illuminated by lights. Additionally, a series of performances including Japanese dance, music, and light shows will enrich the festive experience—making it a must-see spring event this year.
