[Spotlight] is based on the true story that earned the 2003 Pulitzer Prize’s top honor — the “Public Service Award.” It follows a team of reporters at The Boston Globe who dared to expose the inappropriate sexual conduct of clergy members, drawing attention from both local and international media, and ultimately receiving a response from the Roman Catholic Church. This world-shaking news report has now been adapted into a film, directed by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tom McCarthy.

In an interview, the director said: “I want to emphasize through this film how much impact a group of journalists can have when they are fully supported. So what could be more important than the future of our children?” He also clarified that the film is not meant to criticize the Church but to explore “why this happened?” From the cardinal's cover-up, to the Church's interference in the courts, and the lawyers pressuring the victims, these layers of concealment led to irreparable harm.

To ensure the script’s authenticity, Tom McCarthy and co-writer Josh Singer spent months interviewing participants in the events, including journalists, victims, priests, lawyers, and judges. The film also boasts an all-star cast: Oscar nominee Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Stanley Tucci; British Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams, Golden Globe nominee Liev Schreiber, and Emmy nominee John Slattery. Notably, every actor immediately agreed to join — Mark Ruffalo signed on the day after reading the script, and Rachel McAdams confirmed her role after a video conference. All lead actors prepared extensively for the film, even conducting interviews with those involved in the case to authentically portray their struggles during the investigation. This ensemble of top-tier actors delivers one of the most remarkable collective performances in cinematic history!

[Spotlight] received a wave of critical acclaim following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It scored 8.6 on IMDb and an impressive 98% fresh rating on the prestigious review site Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, the film swept numerous awards, earning recognition in dozens of best picture, best screenplay, and best ensemble categories, along with at least eighty nominations. It was also shortlisted for three Golden Globe Awards — Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay — and is a strong contender for the Oscars’ Best Picture.
