The Tokyo-based photographer Kawashima Kotori, recognized with the prestigious Kimura Ihei Photography Award, is holding another photo exhibition in Taiwan. This new series, “Star,” is his latest work following “My Future Sister,” focusing on Taiwan. It took him 3 years, 70,000 film frames, over 30 trips, and 60,000 kilometers of travel back and forth between Taiwan and Japan to document the faces of ordinary people, animals, and street scenes across the land of Taiwan, capturing every touching moment and the most natural, beautiful scenery.

The title of the photo collection “Star” not only suggests that “every Taiwanese person is a shining star,” but also draws on the Japanese description of a “bright, shining star” to convey the idea that “Taiwan is a bright, shining star.”

In terms of the exhibition space, the boundary-free characteristics of the Chi Museum create a natural flow between indoor and outdoor areas. Walking through the exhibition feels as natural and approachable as strolling down the streets and alleys of Taiwan. Kawashima Kotori’s works are like the people and things you might encounter in any corner of Taiwan — simple, yet full of emotion and surprise.
