The powerful earthquake that struck Kumamoto on April 14 not only caused casualties but also disrupted JR Kyushu Shinkansen services. The renowned tourist attraction and historical site, Kumamoto Castle, has also sustained damage from the quake and is temporarily closed.

The parts of Kumamoto Castle affected by the earthquake include fallen roof tiles on the keep, as well as collapses in the surrounding stone walls. Traditional earthen walls, designated as important cultural properties, have also been damaged and peeled away. The castle was closed on April 15, and future reopening will depend on announcements by the management. Even if some areas reopen to visitors, heavily damaged sections will likely remain off-limits. Visitors should pay attention to official opening updates and remain mindful of their safety.

Aftershocks following the earthquake are another concern for Kumamoto Castle. As news of casualties and damage from the Kumamoto earthquake spreads, the Tourism Bureau has announced that Taiwanese tourists in the area are unaffected. Travelers planning future visits to Kumamoto should continue to monitor local conditions, as well as the status of flights and transportation.
