In recent years, marathon fever has swept the globe, and Taiwan’s four marathons — hailed as world-class scenic routes by runners worldwide — include New Taipei’s Wulai Gorge, New Taipei’s Wanjinshi, Hualien’s Tarako, and Hehuanshan. The third Wulai Gorge Marathon will kick off on May 5 this year.

The international travel platform “TripZilla” once recommended the Wulai Gorge Marathon as one of eight must-do “Run-cations (Running Vacations)” in Taiwan for global runners. After registration opened, over 100 international runners signed up, including 30% from the U.S.! Participants also came from neighboring Japan and Hong Kong, various European countries, and even as far as Portugal and Israel.
The Wulai Gorge Marathon offers a unique glimpse of Taiwan’s old mountain railways.
The “Wulai Gorge Marathon,” which has been named one of Taiwan’s Top 10 Quality Events, is a compact yet beautiful tourism-oriented event. With a limited participation of 3,000 runners, its main features include designer medals, travel accommodation discounts, runner-centric experiences, cultural exploration, environmental protection, and an aim to boost local tourism.
Runners can enjoy the magnificent beauty of waterfalls while taking part in the race.
The mountains around Wulai average over 900 meters in elevation, complemented by rugged and stunning landscapes. In May, when temperatures rise, the area remains about 4 degrees cooler than the plains. Coupled with Atayal culture and rich phytoncides, it makes for an ideal destination for vacation running.

Beyond the race route, the finisher gifts are also deeply artistic. The design incorporates the English spelling of “Wulai,” WULAI, along with yarn patterns that convey the area’s mountain-and-water scenery, perfectly showcasing Wulai’s local character. Special care was also taken in crafting the first-timer awards and the finisher trophies, with each medal customized with the name of the individual runner, providing participants with a unique and personal keepsake.
