What makes someone a true movie fanatic? Beyond knowing every line of dialogue by heart, Christopher Moloney, a journalist by profession, takes his passion further by deliberately seeking out filming locations he’s seen in movies while traveling. Uniquely, as a photography enthusiast, Moloney doesn’t just snap a landscape photo and leave; he prepares movie stills in advance, then takes another photo on-site in a way that combines the two, highlighting a feeling of time travel.

Most of the iconic scenes Moloney chooses to photograph are from well-known Hollywood blockbusters, so many people can instantly recognize the location (even if they don’t know the exact place name) and name the movie it’s from. Although Hollywood is located in Los Angeles, California, most film locations are actually in New York City on the East Coast, which remains the most representative place of America.

Hollywood produces a high volume of films, so filming locations span all over the United States. For example, the running scene in Sylvester Stallone’s "Rocky" was shot at the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps. The autobiographical film "Forrest Gump" was filmed in various locations across the U.S., and one of the spots Moloney found is in Savannah, Georgia. As for the classic "Chungking Express," the backdrop behind lead actor James Dean is actually Los Angeles, and the filming location was the Griffith Observatory, not far from Warner Bros.’ studio lot.
