Travelers planning a trip to Osaka should take note: Osaka Prefecture plans to officially introduce an accommodation tax starting January 2017. For stays costing more than ¥10,000yenper night, a tax of ¥100 to ¥300yenwill be levied. The expected annual increase in tax revenue is ¥1.09 billion, which will be used to promote Japan’s tourism industry.

Osaka is the second region in Japan to introduce an accommodation tax, following Tokyo. Starting next January, a tax of ¥100 will be charged for stays costing between ¥10,000 and ¥15,000yenper night, ¥200 for stays between ¥15,000 and ¥20,000, and ¥300 for stays over ¥20,000. Stays under ¥10,000 will be exempt. The tax revenue will be used to improve the tourism environment, such as setting up tourist information centers at train stations.YuanTaxes of 200 yen are imposed on amounts between 15,000 and 20,000 yen, and 300 yen on amounts over 20,000 yen.
