On October 6, 2013, the "Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Fall" was grandly held in Minneapolis, USA. Two Chinese participants were awarded the title of "Global Hero" at the Twin Cities Marathon.
Shen Lin from Zhengzhou and Wang Yaohui from Wuhan are both college students, and they also share a special identity—they are Type 1 diabetics who use insulin pumps.
"Diabetes doesn't mean the end of dreams. Running isn't just about winning, but about enjoying those moments while you run," Wang Yaohui said with a smile, sweat glistening on his young face.
"Believe in yourself, believe in your doctor, and believe in medical technology," Shen Lin said upon crossing the finish line.
It is reported that among the more than 28,700 participants from around the world, 25 special athletes were awarded the title of "Global Hero." Selected as the 2013 Medtronic "Global Heroes," these individuals live with various chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, spinal disorders, chronic pain, or neurological impairments. Thanks to their implanted medical devices, they have continued their passion for running and love for life, racing on the track just like healthy individuals.
It is understood that Medtronic first launched the "Global Hero" marathon event in 2006, inviting numerous long-distance running enthusiasts with implanted medical devices such as pacemakers to gather in Minnesota. Those ultimately selected were honored with the title of "Global Hero." To date, hundreds of long-distance runners who have benefited from medical technology have participated in this event. Their positive and uplifting attitudes have deeply inspired and influenced other people living with chronic illnesses.
In 2010, Chinese contestant Zhang Leting participated in the race, using an insulin pump to manage his diabetes over the long term. This marked the first time a Chinese participant appeared in the history of the competition.
