The adorable penguin mascot from Tokyo’s popular transportation IC card “Suica,” commonly known as the Suica Card (or "Watermelon Card"), has been transformed into a bronze statue and stands in “Suica Penguin Plaza” next to Shinjuku Station, aiming to become a new meeting spot in Shinjuku, just like the Hachiko Dog Statue at Shibuya Station.

Issued by JR East Japan, the “Suica” card functions similarly to the EasyCard and is an essential transportation card for many visitors to Tokyo. JR East Japan has named the pedestrian plaza connected to the new south exit of Shinjuku Station’s ticket gates as “Suica Penguin Plaza” and installed a 2.5-meter-tall bronze penguin statue. The statue is designed in a walking-forward pose, echoing the theme of “moving toward the future.”.
