A magnitude 4.8 earthquake was felt at 00:28 AM on September 1, 2016. The epicenter was located offshore from Yilan, with a Richter scale magnitude of 4.8 and a depth of 16.7 kilometers. The strongest shaking, at magnitude 5, was felt in Su'ao, Yilan.

In addition to the magnitude 5 shaking in Su'ao, Yilan, other areas that felt the quake included: Hualien Heping at magnitude 4, Yilan at magnitude 3, and Taipei City, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, and Taichung at magnitude 2.
