The long-awaited maple leaf season has arrived again. The cool frost of autumn nights and the culture of ancient paths dye the country in elegant shades of red, orange, and gold, offering people a magnificent visual feast. Kyoto’s Tensho-an is a remarkably delicate and exquisite maple viewing spot, with Nanzen-ji, Japan’s highest-ranking Zen temple, being a major highlight.

Nanzen-ji requires an admission fee to enter, but Tensho-an is well worth a visit. Not only can you admire the landscaped design of the temple’s abbot’s garden during the day, but the layered crimson maple leaves on the eaves during night maple viewing are simply breathtaking.

During the maple viewing season, as nighttime temperatures gradually drop, it is recommended to bring extra clothing to ward off the cold winds and to fully enjoy the enchanting night scenery.
