"Godspeed" is a rare road movie from Taiwan. Through a journey from Taipei to the south of the island, it depicts the many perils of life and the various crises caused by mistrust between people. Under the unique cinematography of Chung Mong-hong, the beautiful scenery and unique charm of southern Taiwan are showcased at every turn.

The film has no female lead, yet it is filled with surprisingly brilliant performances. These include the long-absent Hong Kong comedy legend Michael Hui, who made his first cross-strait trip to Taiwan to act in a film, dedicating his Taiwanese film debut to Chung Mong-hong, and even sharing the screen with Taiwan’s rising comedy star Nado. Their first collaboration—starting with bickering due to unfamiliarity and gradually building camaraderie—is hilarious and also deeply touching in their mutual respect.
 
In addition to Michael Hui, Wu Chung-tien, director Chen Yi-wen, and Thai actor Vithaya Pansringarm—who starred in "The Hangover Part II"—are also working with Chung Mong-hong for the first time. The three deliver outstanding performances with precise character portrayals, truly deserving applause. As for Chung Mong-hong’s regular collaborators—Leon Dai, Nado, Liang Che-chun, and Tuo Zong-hua—they also deliver performances unlike before. The eight male actors each shine brilliantly while also competing with one another. With a plot centered around betrayal and loyalty, the film is packed with dramatic tension and pure entertainment.

They head southward, but life keeps knocking them down.


Nado (played by Nado) is a petty crook who lives by trickery and has no proper job. One day, he resolves to find stable employment but ends up becoming a mule for drug transport. During one such delivery, he hitches a ride in a taxi driven by Old Xu (played by Michael Hui)—a Hong Kong native who married a Taiwanese woman. Having failed in business, his only source of income is this old taxi that nobody wants to ride. Two men with vastly different backgrounds and personalities thus begin their journey southward.
 
What initially seems like a simple delivery trip turns into a series of mishaps, including being shaken down and getting caught up in a shootout between criminals. The scenery along the road—and in life—keeps changing, testing their trust and fragile friendship. Just as both their lives hang in the balance, it seems as if fate has already made its move...
 
 
"Godspeed" is Chung Mong-hong’s fourth film as writer and director. The work presents a panorama of Taiwanese society through diverse professions, regional backgrounds, and human nature. It also uses Taiwan’s unique cultural landscapes and a perilous road journey to convey his care for the land. Chung Mong-hong said: "The idea for 'Godspeed' came from a story I once read about a taxi driver who drove a passenger for 25 hours, only for the passenger to run off without paying. That was the starting point for this film. Then I thought of using a Hong Kong driver who had lived here for a long time and a Taiwanese passenger, and what happens between them in the taxi, as a way to reflect on how people from different places can understand and tolerate one another in Taiwan. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do!"
