The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications announced in October its annual Taiwan tourism ambassador to Japan – the popular Japanese goddess Masami Nagasawa. Breaking from past strategies that mainly featured well-known male celebrities, this year the bureau selected the renowned Japanese actress Masami Nagasawa as the tourism ambassador for Taiwan in Japan. The goal is to leverage her high popularity among Japanese women aged 20-35 and her influence on Japanese females. In the “Meet Colors! Taiwan” video released on November 15, Nagasawa beautifully showcased the charm of Taiwan’s scenic spots, earning widespread praise from netizens who shared the video and even commented, “I never knew Taiwan was so beautiful!” This shows how successfully the video conveyed the beauty of Taiwan.

Nagasawa has deep ties with Taiwan, having visited the country multiple times for both work and personal reasons. In 2014, she stayed in Taiwan for half a year while filming the idol drama “Mob Cake Shop,” fully immersing herself in local life. She also later participated in the shooting of the epic film “The Crossing” directed by international filmmaker John Woo, making her one of the few top-tier Japanese actresses with extensive knowledge of Taiwan. During the filming of this promotional video in Taiwan, she visited many popular spots such as Pingxi, Sun Moon Lake, and the Wenchang Temple, which are favored by Japanese tourists, as well as newer cultural destinations like Huashan 1914 Creative Park and 44 South Village.

Nagasawa also stated: “Taiwan has many unique and beautiful sights that Japanese people love. This time, I aimed to present an amazing Taiwan through the nuanced perspective of a traveler. I hope that through my portrayal, I can share with the people of Japan my impressions of Taiwan’s friendly and kind residents, its rich and diverse landscapes, and its variety of delicious foods.”

The number of Japanese visitors to Taiwan in 2016 reached 1,200,733, an increase of 19.7% compared to the same period last year. This year, the number of Japanese tourists is expected to set a new record. Surveys show that Japanese visitors to Taiwan have traditionally been mostly business travelers and male. However, considering that half of Japan’s population is female, this indicates untapped potential and business opportunities in this travel market. Therefore, by leveraging Masami Nagasawa’s immense popularity and influence, the aim is to attract more Japanese tourists to visit Taiwan. The hope is to achieve the goal of 6 million mutual visits between Taiwan and Japan this year and to surpass the milestone of 2 million Japanese visitors to Taiwan as soon as possible.

Additionally, the strategy targets both first-tier and second-tier cities in Japan, expanding sources of independent and group travelers. Different marketing strategies are set according to target demographics, and innovative campaigns will be launched following the introduction of the new female ambassador. These will use creative approaches to capture the attention of Japanese consumers, strengthen their positive impression of Taiwan, and turn it into travel action, thereby expanding the scale and number of Japanese tourists visiting Taiwan.
