Heavy snow fell in Hokkaido in December, while the first snow of 2016 in Kyoto and Nara arrived on December 28. On the morning of the 28th, the temperature in Kyoto was only 1.3°C. Kinkaku-ji, a beloved Kyoto attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 1994, was also blanketed in snow, donning a “snow makeup” as the white flakes covered its roof—an enchanting sight that’s both rare and fleeting.

In addition, Nara and Kobe saw their first snow around 7:00 AM Japan Time on December 28, about 22 days and 16 days earlier than usual, respectively.
