The Taoyuan Airport MRT line is a major national transportation project that the public has eagerly awaited for years. It serves as a crucial link to the international gateway, connecting the Taipei-Taipei-Tao district triangle and the Aviation City Industrial Park, acting as a new artery linking Taiwan with the world, as well as facilitating commuting and economic activity for the people. The Taoyuan Airport MRT, after passing its preliminary inspection, underwent two consecutive days of intensive work. The operational inspection, hosted by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, was completed on December 29 and 30, 2016.

Among the41items for improvement proposed by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications inspection team, there were8“pre-operational improvement items” and33post-operational improvement items. Even after the line opens, there will inevitably be areas needing improvement, and these are what the Taoyuan Rapid Transit Corporation must work on. The Taoyuan Rapid Transit Corporation and the Railway Bureau will establish an operations improvement team to complete the improvements with utmost diligence, making the airport MRT safer, more comfortable, and more efficient, and turning it into a milestone in Taiwan’s public infrastructure development.

Inspection committee members spent two consecutive days carefully examining each station, inspecting locations includingA1Taipei Main Station,A3New Taipei Industrial Park Station,A13Airport Terminal 2 Station,A11Kengkou Station, Luzhu Depot,A8Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Station,A21Huanbei Station,A19Sports Park Station,A18Railway Bureau Taoyuan Station, Qingpu Depot, and the Operations Control Center. They also inspected elements such as the pre-flight check-in process and baggage equipment, station water systems, accessibility facilities, transfer connections, train car equipment, as well as tracks and trackside facilities. The inspectors also simulated issues during the pre-flight check-in process, evaluating the staff training, equipment operation, and emergency response capabilities of the Taoyuan Rapid Transit Corporation through practical drills.

From the testing phase onward, the Taoyuan Rapid Transit Corporation took early responsibility for operational simulations, including IST (System Integration Testing), PRSR (Pre-Revenue Service Running), and system stability testing (seven consecutive days of service according to schedule, with delay rates not exceeding 1% and no more than two incidents of delays over five minutes). On January 1, 2017, the Taoyuan Rapid Transit Corporation released its first VR front-carriage footage, inviting travelers across Taiwan to experience the feeling of “sitting in the driver’s seat” ahead of time. Paired with high-energy music from the band Fire EX., the experience allowed passengers to virtually “sit in the driver’s seat” and take in the full scenery of the airport MRT line through their eyes and technology.

The Taoyuan Rapid Transit Corporation will further finalize a comprehensive planning scheme, with an initial projection to announce the airport MRT operational plan before the Lunar New Year. The preliminary plan includes a one-month trial run, with the first two weeks dedicated to group trial rides and the next two weeks to individual trial rides to enhance familiarity with the operating system. After the trial period, the line will officially open. In the first month following the official opening, fares will be offered at a 50% discount to encourage more people to take the airport MRT.
