Plan a fulfilling birdwatching itinerary

When planning a birdwatching trip, we usually start by deciding on the duration, route, accommodation, and birdwatching locations. Before departure, you can gather information about the environment and bird records of the birdwatching spots to gain a deeper understanding of the surroundings and birds during the trip.

Types of itineraries

They can be broadly divided into observing terrestrial birds or waterfowl. When visiting these birdwatching spots, it’s important to wear a sun hat and take windproof measures, and bring binoculars that include a high-magnification monocular and a scanning binocular.

When arranging an itinerary, consider the following factors during planning:

1. Season and time

April to May:This period is the breeding season for birds. Parent birds are busy collecting nesting materials, building nests, and searching for food to feed their chicks. They fly busily through forests and fields, making it easier to observe them. Improper disturbances during this time may scare parent birds and affect chick-rearing, so try to minimize disruptions as much as possible.

Mid-September to November:This is when migratory birds pass through or arrive in Taiwan for winter following the northeast monsoon — it’s an excellent time for birdwatching.

March:As the northern climate warms up, migratory birds wintering in the south head north, which is also a great time to observe migrant birds.

Other general periods:You can observe resident birds. The best times are early morning just after dawn when birds start foraging, or before sunset when birds return to their night roosts to feed. When birdwatching by the sea, pay attention to times just before high tide and after low tide.

2. Distance considerations

For a single birdwatching spot that’s relatively close, plan at least half a day (morning or afternoon), while for more distant or multiple spots, arrange for a one-day or multi-day birdwatching trip.

3. Accommodation choices

When choosing accommodation, prioritize spots close to bird habitats to make the most of optimal birdwatching times. If necessary, you might even consider living out of your car and spending the night in it.

4. Transportation convenience

If the bird habitats cover a large area or you’re visiting multiple birdwatching spots, consider using your own vehicle. Many national parks, wetlands, or protected areas are vast, so having your own transport makes access more convenient.

Essential gear and attire:

Just prepare a high-quality pair of binoculars and carry a bird field guide to enjoy the pleasure of birdwatching. It may seem simple, but if you want a better birdwatching experience, wearing certain gear is also key. Having all of this equipment will make your activities more comfortable and relaxed. Monocular or binoculars, tripod, notebook and pen, and photography equipment can be included based on personal needs. You can also bring advanced professional research aids such as GPS displays, altimeters, compasses, counters, and camouflage tents. Finally, pack everything into an ideal backpack for convenience, comfort, and safety.
